Blackberry Storm: Yawn?

The Blackberry Storm reviews are out, and while it is no iPhone 3G, it should do the trick for people who do not have access to Apple’s phone.

Will the phone boost Research in Motion’s (RIMM-NASDAQ) stock? I doubt it, the BuySide woke up to competitive issues and the commoditization of handhelds two months ago, and the skepticism is thick, despite anything the wrong way analysts at Goldman Sachs opine.

The stock’s valuation is as compelling as it has been since the patent lawsuit provided a lid to the upside, but valuation is not enough of a thesis in this tape. Still, the bulk of the multiple compression is likely in the rear view mirror, and the stock should bounce with the market, and probably even outperform in a firmer tape...if we ever get one.

Check out the reviews, but it is hard to get excited over this. A new entrant to the smart phone lineup is always welcome, but it does not inspire the same sort of excitement it would have a few months ago, and is far from an iPhone killer.

Apple has the upper hand, but this is the sort of battle that takes no prisoners, and you can’t eat relative performance, as they say.

If you are long the stock, and need a review that makes you feel warm and fuzzy, go read JKontherun’s review here.
