CNBC-First In Business Porn

CNBC's website has made great strides since bringing in Allen Wastler as Managing Editor. But the written word and video content was not exactly the only reason to visit..at least for lonely heart Wall Street Warriors whose charms have been dulled thanks to cash flow issues.

The channel has been running provocative advertising that the moral majority would certainly describe as porn, and CNBC has reluctantly put an end to the practice before Jeff Zucker could make an appearance taking credit for the uptick in site visits and advertising revenue.

Allen Wastler issued an insincere apology that is not funny given CNBC's past brushes with harassment charges:

Dear Readers,

Sorry about the racy dating ads we've had on our site lately.

You know ... the ones showing women unbuttoning sweaters and listing mileage to ladies looking for a date. And the others showing come-hither countenances and blaring "NO CREDIT CARD REQUIRED." ("What?" chimed one of our reporters, "you just leave it on the dresser?")

These ads aren't exactly porn, but they cross the business journalism decorum code, I believe.

How could ads we don’t approve of get on our site? Welcome to the Internet world of networks, where inventory is sold off to middlemen who represent a variety of advertisers. You get all sorts of strange ads running through. We had ones for nipple pads once. You wouldn’t usually expect that with your bond rates, would you?

Now we aren’t prudes at CNBC.com. Heck, we put up swimsuit slideshows that ... well, show some edgy fashion (and some of you objected). But readers choose to go or not to go into a slideshow. Racy ads are just thrust upon them.

We’re in the process of getting them down. Again, sorry.

Of course, this scandal is rather tame compared with CNBC’s sordid past. Sexual piccadildos seem to haunt the network, although I have some sympathy for their position regarding Bonnie Behrend.

She came unglued at my favorite Cabo resort, and has finally settled the case to her financial satisfaction:

Bonnie Behrend — the ex-CNBC anchor, ex-Aspen TV producer and ex-mayoral candidate — agreed to an out-of-court cash settlement with her ex-lover yesterday in district court.

Behrend alleged in a civil lawsuit that part-time Aspenite William J. Kretschmar — president of Inch of Gold, a West Palm Beach-based gold dealer — attacked and threatened her while they were vacationing together at a Cabo San Lucas resort in January 2005.

Tensions between the couple had mounted during the course of their 10-day stay at the tony Palmilla Resort, and, according to allegations in court documents, included a breakfast fruit fight and Kretschmar’s slamming a computer on Behrend’s fingers before they headed home on his private plane.

The former business news reporter — whom The New York Post once romantically linked to billionaire Ronald Perelman and described as “lovely” and “leggy” — has remained in the public eye despite leaving CNBC seven years ago.

She sued NBC after her dismissal, alleging the network failed to act on rampant sexual harassment she suffered during her tenure. The suit claimed her firing caused health problems to her parents, and “caused her cat to be abducted and tortured by a convicted animal molester.”

That case was dismissed. Aspen Daily News

Or course, Wastler was not around for the era of Bonnie, but might want to tread a little more carefully.

Nobody wants to return to those strange days. But clearly working at CNBC can make you loco...good luck with working in the Zoo, Erin Burnett…

Dear StockWockey
1) Thank you for the site traffic spike. You can send your advertisers, too. 2) CNBC’s culture was then and still is an extension of the worst of the industry it covers. It’s a rude, crude locker room. You’re right, let’s not return to that. But if I did, I assure you ratings would return withOUT racy website ads 3)Everyone who was in charge at CNBC during those days was fired for what happened to me and others there. That doesn’t make me crazy. That makes me right. 4) Sorry your favorite Mexican resort was dragged into the assault case and that hotel management at Palmilla couldn’t see fit to handle a criminal matter properly. It’s also unfortunate I wasn’t aware of Kretschmar’s four prior assaults on other women ON PUBLIC RECORD, three additional assaults one witness knew of, or the police report of one woman running away from him in Aspen, beaten and bloodied about the face. IMHO, Kreschmar is Aspen’s OJ in waiting, an unprosecuted habitual felony assault offender still walking the streets. But congratulations to you. With your posting, you have chosen to perpetuate the intellectually-challenged, guilty man’s “go to” defense of calling a woman ‘crazy’ and therefore have become a witness involved in the ongoing case against CNBC 5)Settling the assault case hardly creates satsifaction. This survivor of the serious crime of assault and battery has yet to finish exacting her pound of flesh. Money isn’t the only answer. Exposure and prison time sound good to me. So do other paybacks. 6) You haven’t seen me crazy.  Best always/Bonnie

Bonnie,

A few years ago I blew out to Palmilla to get away from New Yorkers and the first person I saw after checking in was Regis Philbin. It was a down blow given my dislike for Notre Dame, at least on certain Football Saturdays.

Oh well...the margaritas were excellent however. It is quite a resort, I am sorry your time there was not so tranquil.

I was sad to see you leave CNBC years ago, it seemed like you were competent in your job.

Perhaps I am naive, the salacious details you described at CNBC the time seemed to be over the top. I cannot imagine grown men acting quite that badly. Shame on them....

Yes maybe I should think before popping off, but your luck with men parallels my experience with a few women.

Stereotyping the opposite sex will not get us anywhere…

Enjoy the beauty of Aspen. Perhaps you will find some peace and quiet there. It sounds like you enjoy the natural beauty...it is breathtaking.

I will check out your convention coverage....and good luck with the opposite sex.

I think I have thrown in the towel, myself.

Just sign me,

No more drama.
