Thomson Reuters to Exploit “Multi-Media” in Launch of Business Channel
Bloomberg, CNBC and Fox Business Network are duking it out for viewers, but will soon have another pesky competitor:
The Daily Telegraph understands that the plan is for the channel to appear on both the internet and some form of cable or digital platform. The launch could be as early as January but may be pushed back as the company is conscious of Reuters’ earlier unsuccessful foray into television.
Thomson Reuters, the result of the merger of Reuters and the Thomson Corporation last year, wants an extra avenue through which to channel content and raise revenues. Going head-to-head with the other rolling business channels is a brave move by chief executive Tom Glocer, as it is an already crowded market.
The New York newsroom, which will act as the main studio for the channel was opened yesterday by Devin Wenig, chief executive of Thomson Reuters’ markets division.
In an internal memorandum, editor-in-chief David Schlesinger said the new newsroom was all about “multi-media opportunities”. Thomson Reuters spokesmen had not returned calls at the time of going to press. Telegraph
Perhaps you can throw Yahoo’s Tech Ticker into the mix as well; the new initiative will not apparently not have the distribution/carriage issues that CNBC does, and will likely stream right to your desktop.
There is a chance the channel might spawn the next Money Honey. Stock it like a trout pond, Thomson, and we are there.
