monopolyThis should be good news for all you i-bankers who have been putting in 18-hour days in the hope of big bonus payouts this year. Even if your kids don’t recognize you and your wife won’t speak to you, take comfort in the fact that economists have recently found that money does in fact buy happiness: Data from the National Opinion Research Center show that the top fifth of income earners are about 50% more likely to say they are “very happy” than people in the bottom fifth, and only about half as likely to say they are “not too happy.” Money can buy you happiness another way: By giving it away. Studies have shown that people who donate to charity are 40% more likely to say they are “very happy” than non-donors.

Cuban Abandons Dreams of Sports Betting Hedge Fund

cubanIs it any surprise to learn that Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban thinks that the public markets are rigged against investors? The former founder of Broadcast.com was even threatening to launch a hedge fund to bet on sporting events, arguing that professional gamblers have better access to information than profession investors. The goal of the fund was to prove that the stock market was “more Ponzi scheme than efficient markets,” Mr. Cuban said when he announced the fund about a year ago. Now he says he’s happy that someone else has already moved on his idea--he doesn’t have time to pursue it anyway.

plateWe gotta get us some religion. Fast. We've always ignored the Sunday morning televangelists promising prosperity to the faithful, but now that a real, live economist--from Harvard, no less--is touting the theory, we're believers. Check out the findings: On average, a household with double the rate of religious attendance as another household has 9.1 percent more income. That extra participation in religious activity decreases welfare participation by 16 percent from the usual rate. Not too shabby. Worth a few trips to ye olde house of worship we'd say. Of course, if you factor in the $88 billion in religious donations every year, we wonder how far ahead the church-goers really are. Churchgoers Are Wealthier [Christian Science Monitor]

NY Mag Sex Issue: Flacid Showing by Wall Streeters

coupleReading New York Magazine's latest sex issue, we were starting to lose faith in our target audience. Everyone--editors, stylists, musicians, designers--except the bankers was getting in on this non-monogamy thing. Three-ways, orgies, the list goes on. What a bunch of tight-asses, we thought. Then, approaching the last page, we found salvation in a sexy CFO named Mia: “A woman needs to feel potent, too,” the 32-year-old says. “She needs to know men want her. It fuels her fantasies. It makes her feel alive.” We're listening. “Before Tom and I were engaged,” she continues, “I could leave town and end up in bed with an entire soccer team and he’d never know. And he was always smart enough not to ask.” A bit of redemption for the finance crowd, to be sure--but still no Wall Street representation. Let's try to do better next year, okay?
