48 Hours: ‘04 Bordeaux Finds Some Friends
With the 2004 Bordeaux vintage caught between the good ‘03’s and the phenomenal, and phenomenally expensive ‘05’s, it is likely to be one of those overlooked vintages that can offer great bargains.
I’m surprised by how delicious the top 2004s are, much better than I expected. Now in bottle, the wines will start trickling into shops in the next few months.
Though they don’t have the concentration, depth and intensity of the great 2005s I tasted in barrel last spring in Bordeaux, the best 2004s have elegance and balance, very pure red-currant fruit flavors, good tannic structure and a wonderful lively freshness.
``It’s a classic vintage,’’ says Veronique Sanders of Chateau Haut-Bailly in Graves. ``For us, it’s bigger than ‘03.’’
Von Neipperg echoes this: ``In fact, many St. Emilions, Pomerols and Margaux are better in ‘04 than ‘03.’’ Bloomerg
I don’t know wine writer Elin McCoy at Bloomberg. But I do know I would like her job.
