Apocalypse Hampton: Here Come the Helicopters
Happy Memorial Day?
Not for the thousands of year round residents of the East End of Long Island, whose hamlets are plagued by an infestation of winged creatures every summer. And yes, the locals are bugging out, as the peacocks begin to strut their stuff in their annual invasion:
Jill Zarin found a summer travel bargain she couldn't pass up: 10 helicopter trips to the Hamptons for $28,000.
"Honestly, to me time is money," said Zarin, 44, who shuttles between her city home and her beach house while overseeing a Manhattan fabric company and appearing on Bravo's "Real Housewives of New York."
"I've got so many things going on," she said. "I'm managing a business, doing a TV show, taking care of my family and running back and forth from the Hamptons to the city." Newsday
Senator Chuck Schumer, who is busy stirring the pot in the controversy over the ratings agencies, is in the thick of this fight as well:
Angelina and Brad Don’t Drive East/Just Fired
Sen. Charles Schumer helped broker an agreement with the Eastern Region Helicopter Council this winter to establish new routes and altitude standards to keep the noise down en route to and from the Hamptons—a confederation of villages and hamlets stretching 40 miles along eastern Long Island’s south shore. Officials also want the helicopters to fly at 2,500 feet or higher for as long as possible before landing.
Of course, why hurry to the beach when the Blue Parrot remains shuttered? Sure, the food was nasty but the vibe was as relaxed as you can get in East Hampton. Alas, Roland long ago packed his bags and the building remains vacant, according to Gridskipper, the Successor site to The Beach
Up until the close of summer 2006, the Blue Parrot offered one of the more pleasant spots to enjoy a margarita and some guac in East Hampton. The restaurant shuttered, sadly, though word on the street last spring had Ralph Lauren taking it over to open, oddly, a restaurant modeled on The Ivy in Los Angeles. But plans for this particular part of Ralphampton seem to have fallen apart, which is how the lease on the old Blue Parrot space came to fall into the hands of one Julie Stone, who planned to reopen it this spring with a similar menu but a different name. Fair enough.
Except that there’s clearly no activity going on at the location, and, um, there’s a for-lease sign from Corcoran posted prominently out back. Gridskipper
Yes, unemployed Wall Streeters might not have filed a flight plan for a summer share with the job market in the tank, and with Mark Baker nearing retirement, Dan Loeb busy surfing, Lizzie Grubman riding shotgun, Seinfeld nailing his mistress and Wall Street low on funds, the most excitement this summer might come from the film crew of Gossip Girl who are taking over for a few weeks as they begin shooting several episodes of a 24 episode season at the beach.
Yeah, its not Entourage, but it will have to do. Don’t worry, Wall Street, everything will work out alright.
