Solar themes have been the hottest thing on Wall Street for some time now, which is not lost on Apple, Inc. (AAPL-NASDAQ) and trendy (iPhone) is meeting trendy theme (photovoltaic cells):

Employees at computer, phone and software company Apple have filed a patent to place solar cells on portable devices, Trade the News reported Monday.

Outfitted with such technology, Apple’s devices, like the iPhone, could have photovoltaic cells stacked underneath LCD touch screens, thus maximizing the area available for harnessing the sun.

The filing said that information regarding the performance of a device’s solar cells could be displayed on the main screen next to info for battery power, text message alerts and time of day. Or this information could also appear on top of the solar cells themselves, which are likely to display some version of the Apple logo.

In any case, Apple’s new technology could herald the next generation of wireless mobility. Without the need to electrically charge devices--either via outlets or USB cables--users could at last start to break free from on-the-grid power connections. Forbes

Goldman recently added the stock to its conviction buy list, a list of dubious merit in my eyes, but good enough Friday to reverse Thursday jitters in the stock which were brought on by rumors of a delay in the launch of the 3G iPhone.

Apple, Inc’s stock is one of the few games in town for the longs, and in a few hours we will find out if traders, no doubt sporting tans from the holiday weekend, use it as an excuse to lift the shares higher. Of course, while a solar powered phone has its merits, finding a ray of light in the canyons of Wall Street is a difficult task these days.

Comments:

Nice scoop. Love the last line - TOO BAD ABOUT THE TYPO.

P.S. (And “it” in the penultimate sentence is an orphaned pronoun. We shouldn’t have to read to the next sentence to recover the missing subject for which “it” is supposed to stand). Just sayin.
