ArcelorMittal’s Random Acts of Kindness
ArcelorMittal (MT-NYSE) is slowly making its presence felt in the U.S., recently hiring a full time Investors Relations professional for North America and completing its first ever capital raise on the continent.
ArcelorMittal completed the pricing of a US$ denominated issue of 5 year and 10 year notes, consisting of US$3,000,000,000 aggregate principal amount split equally between the 5 year and the 10 year issue. The notes will bear interest at a rate of 5.375% for the 5 year and 6.125% for the 10 year and will mature on June 1st 2013 and June 1st 2018, respectively. Business Wire
Investment bankers need to eat too, and no doubt appreciate the business, which could have just as easily been done in Europe. A closing dinner was held at a private room at Del Frisco's in midtown Manhattan, and a good time was had by all. Particularly by those people who blew off work today. Since when are sulfites an excuse to call in sick? Red wine is good for you, in moderation.
And while the chart of their stock is worthy of framing, Aditya Mittal, the young scion of the Mittal family, is quickly garnering a fan club . Already the subject of tabloid rumors, he has quickly figured out how to handle Wall Street as well as Fleet Street, denying rumors circulating in the British tabloids that he is buying a $400 million property in London. Of course, with ArcelorMittal's enterprise value in the neighborhood of $170 billion, and his family the wealthiest residing in the UK, he can probably afford it.
And while most guests on CNBC become putty in Erin Burnett's hands, I think Aditya turned the tables on her as she melted before the baby faced billionaire in an interview yesterday:
While pricing a debt deal in the States will feed several bankers families for the next few months, the company’s donations to the Chinese earthquakes victims include a sizable cash donation and plans for the construction of an “anti-seismic” school to be built in the affected area.
The worlds is getting smaller, and it appears Lakshmi and Aditya Mittal are more than up to the challenge of setting an example for the rest of us, as good corporate citizens.
Well done, Mittal’s, well done.
