Big Pay Day for Big Brown: $50+ million
Most hedge fund managers never have days like Big Brown experienced on May 17, 2008. His win at the Preakness, and new stud contract, add up to some serious coin for the super horse. The win at the Preakness paid him $600,000; rumors have his stud contract north of $50 million:
Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown will stand stud at Three Chimneys Farm in Midway, Kentucky, which purchased an undisclosed interest in the colt. Financial details weren’t disclosed. NBC Sports said it was worth more than $50 million. The network didn’t say where it got its information.
``We have entertained a variety of flattering offers but felt Three Chimneys was the best choice for us,’’ Michael Iavarone, co-president of International Equine Acquisitions Holdings Inc., which owns 75 percent of the 3-year-old colt, said in a statement. ``We were determined to participate in his breeding career and the Three Chimneys deal has given us this opportunity.’’
After the Derby, Iavarone was asked at a post-race party if he’d take $60 million for Big Brown, which cost his group $2.5 million for his stake last September.``No,’’ replied Iavarone, who’s said the same to six subsequent offers. ``There are some figures we couldn’t refuse,’’ he said, mentioning as a for-instance $100 million. ``We have all options open.’’ Bloomberg
Watch Big Brown hit the afterburners at the end of the race...yowza!

Big Brown barely broke a sweat, but racing fans are getting lathered up over the Belmont. The horse really hit the afterburners in the back stretch, covering 1 3/16 miles in 1:54.80. Secretariat’s Preakness time was long disputed, he won by 2 1/2 lengths and finished in either 1:53.40 or the official time of 1:54.40. Big Brown had plenty in reserve today however, and could have easily run faster if needed. In any case, Big Brown can be the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 30 Years when the Belmont is held on June 7th.
The next Secretariat? No so fast, says one pro…
The Belmont figures to be a stiffer test for the Kentucky-bred Boundary colt, with several Derby also-rans resting up for the demanding mile and a half, and Casino Drive, a new shooter from Japan, promising to make the Triple Crown finale interesting. Can Casino Drive improve off his impressive victory in last Saturday’s Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park in his attempt to become the third consecutive Belmont winner produced from the mare Better Than Honour? If so, he will force Big Brown to run the race of his life in order to join Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), and Affirmed (1978) as Triple Crown winners. Big Brown should draw a big crowd in three weeks; perhaps larger than the 67,605 that attended in 1973 to see Big Red make history; he won by 31 lengths and set a record in the 1 1/2 mile that still stands.
