No suprises from the new study provacatively titled “Sex Matters: Gender and Mutual Funds.” Written by Stefan Ruenzi, an assistant finance professor at the University of Cologne in Germany, and one of his Ph.D. students, Alexandra Niessen, the paper finds that male mutual fund managers are much more likely than their female counterparts to make riskier bets, trade more and experience style drift. Great, just what you want in a mutual fund manager! It’snot all that bad though. Men and women turned in similar risk-adjusted returns over time but the authors argue that you’re better off going with the ladies from a portfolio construction perspective because they do what they say they’re going to do.
