The compensation arms race for lawyers in the City of Angels is heating up, now that Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has announced that it is bumping up first-year associates pay $10,000 to $135,000. The firm-wide raises will also boost fourth-year base pay to $170,000 and seventh-year pay to $210,000. The move is likely to force the hands of other bulge-bracket firms. “All firms that consider themselves to be among Gibson Dunn’s peer group will be forced to follow to $135,” said consultant Richard Gary. “I am convinced of it. There is no way they can afford to stay at $125.”

Really, is this a big deal?  Many firms did this years ago (Skadden and some other monsters).  Either way, this the first real raise since 2000 - yes, the tech boom.  Salaries went from 90K to 125K.  Besides, what is an extra $400 or so going to do?  I guess it makes the glorified bag carriers and document reviewers feel more important, like those long hours in the library meant something (can you tell that I’m a lawyer?)
