Herb Greenberg Says Farewell
Herb Greenberg is finished as a journalist after 34 long years in the trenches. Herb did not win them all but will leave with a reasonably good batting average; Herb found himself right in many of the most contested firefights on Wall Street over the past decade.
I will miss his presence in the media even though I was on the other side of the trade from time to time. Herb kept me honest, redoubling my research efforts if need be, and the comments he received from vocal detractors over th years providing priceless entertainment at times.
His farewell column is up over at Marketwatch. be sure to check it out. His lessons learned over the years might make you a better investor, and I am particularly fond of the first one on his list:
Lesson No. 1: The numbers don’t lie. They can be stir-fried, oven-fried or convection-baked, but in the end they always hold the keys to the kingdom. That is why some short sellers and forensic analysts don’t like to talk to companies. They want to avoid the spin or the face-to-face meeting that can create a psychological connection that may skew what otherwise would be black-and-white analysis. Don’t ever underestimate the power and influence of the human factor. Marketwatch
With Mr. Pink in retirement, and Herb off to greener pastures, the world is a bit safer for stock promoters of all stripes. Somebody needs to step up and fill the void; there are lots of bad guys and not enough cops.
Happy Trails, Herb.
