computerIdentity theft isn’t just for dumpster divers or for hackers in the former Soviet Republics. InvestmentNews.com is reporting that corporate mirror fraud has been rising rapidly in the broker-dealer world: So far 75 or so b-d’s have had their identities stolen by con artists who use nearly the same names of real firms to set up fake websites, track down shareholders of worthless stock and then offer to find buyers of those shares for a fee. According to Investment News, the imposters take the registration fee and run. And while the various enforcement agencies claim to recognize the problem, there’s no evidence that they are on to the bad guys.
