houseThanks in no small part to the earnings engine of Wall Street, Manhattan has held the title of the highest earning county in the United States for the past five years running. The average weekly paycheck for a job in Manhattan is $2,025, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. That represents a raise of 5.8 percent in the borough's average paycheck from a year earlier. The second-highest paying jobs are only a Metro-North ride away in leafy Fairfield County (which includes Greenwich and Westport). The average weekly paycheck there is $1,613 a week from local jobs. According to the BLS, hedge funds are largely to thank for the Connecticut suburb's strong showing. Silicon Valley was third. Wall Street's bonuses are the driving force for Manhattan and Fairfield County," said Michael Dolfman, the Bureau's regional commissioner. "For San Francisco, we're seeing the 'Google effect.'"
