MLB: All-Star Financials and International Appeal
Baseball has come a long way since 1994, when the strike killed off the entire postseason. It was also the start of asterisk’s becoming ubiquitous in the record books.
The strike cost owners and players and estimated $1 billion. That buys a lot of ‘Roids.
But baseball’s fortunes appear to be inversely correlated with the Yankee’s dominance. The past four years have witnessed heady growth, and attendance is on track to break records for the fourth year in a row. MLB revenue tallied $5.2 billion last year, fourteen times the level seen in 1992. And 30% of all current major leaguers were born outside the U.S., with Dominican’s leading the way. Baseball players seem to be much like international capital flows. They go where they are best treated.
BTW, I have to go with the American League. In a romp. And not just saying that because A-Rod’s girlfriend might be there.
