MLB Trade Deadline Approaching
July 31st is the trade deadline for MLB contending teams to try and bolster their line ups for the playoff push. Every year at this time teams on top of their respective divisions or in the hunt, look for a player who a non contending team is willing to part with because of a big contract, or he’ll be a free agent at the end of the season. They will have the ability to obtain some young prospects in the trade who will hopefully help them in the seasons to come.
For teams like Cincinnati, Texas, Tampa Bay and Kansas City it’s a chance to unload a player(s) who’s not helping them win now anyway, dump a large salary and receive some minor league value for rebuilding. Wealthier teams such as the Yankees are not concerned with the possible large salary that comes with the player (ie. Yankee’s acquiring Bobby Abreu last year). The risk for the contending team is depleting their minor league talent level with the acquisition of the new player (ie. Met’s trade of Scott Kazmir few years back).
The market is not like years past, partly due to revenue sharing, but below are some of the bigger names who might be moved.
Jose Cotreras P White Sox
Mark Teixeira 1B Rangers
Jermaine Dye OF White Sox
Sammy Sosa OF Rangers
Eric Gagne RP Rangers

Mike Piazza C/DH A’s
Chad Cordero RP Nationals
Ray Durham 2B Giants
