NFL Picks Week 2
Kevin is back at it for another shot...he is complaining about last week’s thievery. Speaking of which, the Yankees stole one from the Red Sox last night. Tee-hee.
A 1-3 start. Of course, I could attempt to blame it on the Patriots and their use of videocamera’s stealing the Jets defensive signals like some players and teams have done. (By the way, it’s my opinion that the penalty was too harsh, but that’s a subject for another day.) However, just like a CB that just got burned, a “handicapper” needs to put past mistakes behind him and focus on the current “play”.
Here’s how I see some games shaping up this weekend:
NE -3 vs SD: This is the game of the week and maybe of the season. In my opinion, these are the 2 most balanced teams in the league and, based on talent alone, this game is worthy of the hype. Add in how their last meeting ended and the whole “Beli-Cheat” scandal and this game will certainly be a media circus.
Nonetheless Belichick will have the Pats focused on the task at hand and they will be ready. Since L.T. skipped all pre-season games, he is still working off some rust. The Pats solid OL play should keep the Chargers from applying the pressure they’re accustomed to putting on opposing QBs. The Chargers two biggest strengths (L.T. and their pass rush) won’t play as big of a factor as they should later in the season. Therefore, I expect the Patriots to cover.
DAL -3.5 at MIA: Road game? “America’s Team” may have to hop a plane, but I would expect to see a crowd full of # 31, # 9, # 81 jerseys, etc. This game won’t be a shoot-out like DAL/NYG, but Dallas’s offense will still get their points (mid-20’s). The ‘Fins, on the other hand, won’t. Their offense will struggle all season and I expect Phillips to dial up the pressure a notch on Trent Green, especially if Terrence Newman, who practiced Thursday, is back. I expect the Cowboys to win by 10+.
MIN +3 at DET: Some times a team just has another team’s number. The Yankees payroll is 10 x’s that of the D’Rays, but the D’Rays always seem to give the Yanks trouble. In this case, the talent differential isn’t nearly as great, but the Vikings have won the past 10 meetings since 2002. Like the saying goes, “the trend is your friend”. Take the Vikings and the points.
GB +1.5 at NYG: Despite conflicting reports circulating (could play, could miss a month, etc.), Eli is not likely to play this weekend. The Packers young defense is improving and underrated. They put a lot of pressure on McNabb, who looked reasonably mobile. Jared Lorensen, about as mobile as a tree, will struggle in his first career start. The Packers will hurry the inexperienced, immobile QB into making plenty of mistakes. The Giants won’t be able to overcome the rash of injuries they suffered in week 1. Take the Packers and the points.
Enjoy your weekend and this week’s games.
