Now that Sandy Weill, the 73-year-old ex-head of Citigroup, has retired he’s planning on spending his time figuring out how to give away the approximately $1.4 billion fortune he amassed by building the world’s largest financial supermarket through a series of mergers over the past couple of decades. While the world has been led to believe that Weill’s success was based on his intellectual and deal-making powers, there are now signs that something far greater was at work: Rather than strike a deal with the devil, Sandy went straight to the big guy upstairs to secure his personal success. And now it’s time to pay the piper. “That’s the deal I’ve made with God,” he said of his decision to give it all away. It seems like he forgot to negotiate terms for post-retirement though, adding, “I hope that he gives us the time.”
