Scary October for Merrill Lynch

Merrill Lynch’s scary writedown is bad news for the bonus pool, and employees continue to schvitz over their year-end numbers. But Merrill’s shareholders are taking it on the chin as well, bringing up the rear since the skeletons came out of the closet mid-July. Stan O’Neal committed the cardinal sin, and with the rank and file out for blood, the grim reaper might be showing up at his door around Halloween. Will he outlast Jimmy Cayne?
