Surpassing most people’s end-of-year predictions, Wall Street bonuses are estimated to hit $21.5 billion for 2005, according to the NY state comptrollers office. This tops even 2000 when about $19.5 billion was paid out (though if you adjust for inflation it’s more like $22.3 billion). The average bonus for 2005 of $125,000 also sets a record, besting 2004’s number of $114,270. In the understatement of the year, comptroller Alan Hevesi said, “Wall Street continues to be critically important to the economies of both the city and the state.”
