Veteran Caddies Talk Golf and Life
There is a wonderful article in the New York Times about several 70-year old professional caddies who live in Harlem and work the prestigious country clubs north of New York City. A story is related about Tom Weiskopf scoring a 13 on the 12th hold of the 1980 Masters. the caddies interviewed working for some big names beside Weiskopf: Julius Boros, Don January, and Charles Coody.
My golf addiction was never as acute as some on Wall Street, but I have been lucky enough to get on some of the legendary courses in the country over the years; Pine Valley and Sankaty Head were my favorites. I played Pinehurst a few months before Payne Stewart’s jet went down and had the most memorable caddy experience. That guy was awesome and helped my save at least 10 strokes that day as I lag putted 20 yards off the green at times. Those greens were like rocks that day...super hard and fast. These caddies are a dying breed, and this article is a must read.
