Zeke Speaks: Good Riddance Yankees
Ed. Note- We wanted to make sure the Yankees were dead and buried before posting Zeke’s latest piece, which might warm the heart of Joe Torre. God bless Zeke and Joe, two fine Americans.
A View from the Bench:
It is time I told you why the Yankees are not my favorite team.
The year is 1946. I was invited to work our during spring training in St. Petersburg, FL with the Yankees. All the “Stars” worked out in Panama that year, and I played with the pitchers and catchers in St. Pete.
The head Yankee scout at that time was a guy named Paul Kritchel. This is the same Paul Kritchel that went up to the Columbia campus and signed Lou Gehrig. This is the same guy what went to San Francisco and signed Joe DiMaggio.
After two full weeks Paul calls me over to the bench and says, “Son, good field, no hit, go home and get a job.” The same guy that signed Gehrig and DiMaggio let me slip through his fingers. I guess any scout can make one mistake.
And that is why the Yankees have not won a pennant or a World Championship since the end of World War 2.
That is a joke of course. But this is not.
Lets go Mets!
